The title of the post totally gives it away, but… MIKE AND I ARE ENGAGED!!! After almost 5 years of dating and one year of being first time homeowners together, we’re finally taking the next “big step” in our relationship. I can’t wait to tell you all about our engagement!
Over the Halloween weekend, Mike and I celebrated one year of being homeowners. I’m still in disbelief that it’s already been a year! It’s one of those things where it feels like we JUST moved in while at the same time feels like we’ve been here for much longer. Life is strange sometimes. But in a beautiful way.
Since my blogging has been so off and on over the last year or two, I haven’t really had a chance to talk too much about our house or the whole home-buying process. It was definitely a crazy journey, but I am so glad we decided to do it. I’m also glad it’s the last time we’ll have to move for quite a while! That part wasn’t so fun… especially after doing our big move only a few months before.
We’ve made quite a lot of changes in the last year (although there’s still SO many more projects to come!). We’ve also learned a LOT during this process, and we really couldn’t have prepared ourselves for all of the things we now have to worry about. But that’s part of the fun (and responsibility), haha. Luckily, we have a few handy friends and family members who have helped us along the way.
Now comes the fun part – our engagement story!
To celebrate our house-iversary, we decided to go out for a date night dinner. I got to pick the place, so I chose Sono sushi in downtown Raleigh. As we were getting ready to leave, I walked into the living room and got a BIG surprise from Mike! He told me to close my eyes, and when I opened them, he was on one knee.
HE POPPED THE QUESTION! I, of course, said yes 🙂
It was such a sweet moment, and though I wasn’t 100% surprised (I did pick out the ring after all – more on that in a bit), it was still the perfect moment. Just the two of us together in our house with our sweet puppy. It was simply us. After celebrating and getting over the shock, we called my mom and Mike’s mom first. Then, on the way to dinner I called my grandparents and my BFF from back home and texted/Snapchatted a bunch of friends and coworkers (a total millennial moment, right?). Once we got to downtown, we got to enjoy our sushi dinner and celebrate 2 awesome things! We’re all growed up.
I am so excited to marry my best friend and soul mate! Mike & I aren’t the most “traditional” when it comes to our relationship – we’ve lived together for a couple of years now, own a house, and have a puppy… but we’re okay with that. We’ve done things the way that felt right for us (plus now-a-days, it doesn’t matter as much to keep with tradition, amiright?). Mike also wanted us to pick out the ring together, because he wanted to be sure I had a ring I loved and would want to wear for the rest of my life. We have already talked a lot about how we want our wedding to be, and it’s great to have a partnership where we’re both on the same page about pretty much everything 🙂
We’re still just enjoying being engaged and haven’t started planning quite yet, but I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about all of that on here at some point. I will be doing a lot of research in the coming months since I have no idea what I’m doing! Luckily, 2 of my friends got engaged this year too, so I can look to them for advice. (PS: If you have any generalized tips, feel free to share!)
Thanks for reading all about our special day & stay tuned for continuing updates! xoxo
