Now that Mike and I live in North Carolina, this is our first real summer in the south, living fairly close to a beach, and in a new city full of places to explore! You can bet that we’ve been getting out and exploring every chance we get. Summer is the peak time for traveling, but if you’re like us, you want to keep your traveling within a budget. Moving out of state certainly isn’t cheap, so we’ve been looking for ways to have as much fun this summer without breaking the bank.

There are many ways to keep summer traveling affordable. Have a “staycation” and check out places in your own backyard that you’ve never been to. Find places within a couple of hours of you to keep the cost of gas down. If you have friends or family you can stay with, that will eliminate your need for a hotel. Or, you can go camping! Plus, you can always do a little research to find events and attractions that are free or have discounts.

Lately, Mike and I have been visiting the local lakes and luckily for us, there are many nearby. Our current favorite is Jordan Lake – which is just a short 25 to 30-minute drive away. It has a gorgeous beach/swimming area and though it isn’t nearly as big as Lake Erie, it is just as nice! It’s also very affordable – some areas you can visit for free on the weekdays, but our favorite spot is called Seaforth Beach, which only costs $6/day. It’s a great spot to catch some sun, have a picnic or cookout, plus there’s sand volleyball courts or boat rentals if you’re feeling sporty/adventurous. There’s so much to do for any age, making it a great spot for family outings.

When planning our next quick trip to Jordan Lake, I took advantage of my new ZTE ZMAX phone with Walmart Family Mobile. I knew I’d need to do some quick planning to make our trip even better, and this phone was the perfect companion throughout the entire process. Getting the phone was so easy (especially when compared to going to an actual cell phone store). All I had to do was walk in to Walmart’s electronics section, pick out my phone and starter kit, and purchase. Once I got home, I activated the phone and started setting it up with my account and downloading my favorite apps. Then, I made a quick list of things I needed to buy for our upcoming trip using Microsoft OneNote, which I could then check off as I found each item. Bonus: Walmart Family Mobile’s service is only $29.88/month (for the first line) with unlimited talk, text & data, including up to 1G of 4G LTE data. Score!

During our shopping trip, I made sure to pick up all the affordable summer travel essentials we’d need. Here’s my list of must-have items:

Affordable Summer Travel Essentials:

  1. Beach Umbrella
  2. Beach Towel
  3. Beach Chairs
  4. Beach Bag (I love my Activyst Mexico Playa tote for the beach!)
  5. ZTE ZMAX with Walmart Family Mobile
  6. LaCroix (refreshing, crisp sparkling water with no sugar or sodium!)
  7. Sunglasses
  8. Sunscreen (get a high SPF, especially if you’re fair like me.)
  9. Cooler
  10. Snacks (I’ve been loving pistachios lately.)
  11. Floppy hat

All of these products can be found for reasonable prices, and are the essentials you’ll need for summer travel. You can adjust this list based on your chosen activity (especially if there isn’t a beach involved) but this should get you started.

Once we had all our essentials purchased and packed, it was time to head off to the lake! The ZTE ZMAX with Walmart Family Mobile was perfect for bringing on the trip to Jordan Lake. Since we still don’t know our way around North Carolina, we used Google Maps to navigate. I was also able to take advantage of the ZMAX’s big screen size by relaxing with a good book on the beach using the Amazon Kindle app. Plus, I always like having a portable camera around. I never had issues connecting, either!

We had such a fun late afternoon taking in the scenery and enjoying each others’ company. We absolutely love exploring North Carolina, and with the help of Walmart Family Mobile, we’re excited to keep finding new hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems in the area. We’re already planning trips to Charlotte, Virginia Beach, the Outerbanks, and of course we’ll keep exploring the Raleigh-Durham area as well.

Now that you know what essentials to bring with you when traveling this summer, where will your adventures take you? How can Walmart Family Mobile help you plan for your summer traveling?

Until next time…
